2013 PLANT CATALOG

Seeds are available on our seed page

Our plant offerings change with availability as many of our plants are rare and propagated only in small numbers.  They are added to the website as they become available or they may only be available for sale on site at the farm.  We are continually sourcing and propagating new plants so check back often to see what's new...

IMPORTANT PLANT SHIPPING INFORMATION:
We begin shipping plants in mid-April (with the exception of lily bulbs and dahlia tubers).  The only plants that can be ordered at this time are those that we expect will be rooted and ready to ship by then.  We propagate our plants from seed, divisions and cuttings and they need time to develop good root systems so you will see estimated availability dates by those that we do not expect to be ready for the first round of April shipping.  Plants can be added to your order (we add new ones as they are available) by emailing us, there is no need to create a new order if your order is still waiting to be shipped.  We charge shipping at the time of shipping along with a $4.00 packing/handling charge for orders with multiple plants.  We will ship the most economical way either by FedEx Ground for West Coast customers or Priority Mail or FedEx 3-Day Air for customers East of Colorado as plants cannot be in transit more than 3 days.  If the order is just for a bulb or tuber that we can send via regular mail you will simply be charged the postage and no additional handling fee - that is for when we must pack and ship several plants.  We are committed to doing our best to charge you the least amount we can for shipping but plants can be tricky.

Sambucus 'Black Lace' is a stunning development in Elderberry breeding. Intense purple black foliage is finely cut, giving it an effect similar to that of Japanese maple. Indeed, some designers are using it in place of the more sensitive acer varieties since BLACK LACE is extremely durable and adaptable. Creamy pink flowers in spring contrast nicely with the dark leaves. They are followed by blackish red fall berries which can be harvested for making elderberry wine and jam, or left on the plant to attract birds and other wildlife. BLACK LACE is very cold hardy (Zone 4) and easy to grow, and adaptable to most sites. Full sun is needed for the best color. It can be used as a dramatic accent plant, planted en masse for a trouble free high hedge, or incorporated into the mixed or perennial border. Left alone it will reach up to 8 feet in height, but BLACK LACE can also be pruned back each year to fit into more formal settings.

One of my favorite sedums in a lovely chocolate color with dusty-rose flowers.  It looks especially nice in our Neopolitan Garden.  A first-rate plant for edging sunny borders, in the rock garden or in containers. In very rich soil this selection is inclined to lose its wonderful dark chocolate colour, so hold back on the fertilizer if possible. Pinch or prune plants back by half in June if they get floppy. Trim back to the ground in early spring.  Sun, 12" high.  Zones 3-9.

    $8.00

Another one of my personal favorites.  This charming "chocolate" blue eyed grass is a delightful addition to any garden yet it is quite rare and difficult to find.  We finally have enough from our gardens to divide and offer this year.   A dwarf relative of the Iris, it forms low tufts of grassy leaves with clusters of small starry flowers in a strange mixture of yellow, mauve and chocolate.  A nice choice for rock gardens or edging and especially good in trough or container plantings.  Sun. 8-12" tall, 6-8" spread.  Zones 5-9. 4" size.

    Price:
    $6.00

Delicious and wonderful pinkish brown brushes of color against a white backdrop with a lovely fragrance to boot.  The mix also includes some solid dark maroon blooms to creat a lovely blend of chocolate sweet pea bliss.  Oh how I love this flower!  Annual.  Sun.  4" pot with 3 plants to a pot.

Meadow-rue has beautiful, lacy foliage a little bit like a Columbine or Maidenhair Fern in effect. This species produces rather tall clumps, with deep purple stems that bear big clusters of bright lavender-mauve flowers in midsummer. Both the leaves and flowers are excellent for cutting. Terrific in the woodland garden, or in a moist sunny border.  This might need to be staked to prevent the plants from flopping over.  Zone 4-9.  Part Shade.  5-8' tall (8' in very rich soil!), 18-24" spread.

    Price:
    $7.00

Peacock Flower. Gorgeous big pure white exotic-looking flowers, three broad petals around central bowl. Flowers all summer, though individual flowers last only one day. Half hardy bulb, dig up corms or sow seed annually. Likes sun & good drainage 18".  Seedlings from this season's crop.  4" pot size.

    Price:

Yes, you can have your tomatoes in chocolate now!  What will we think of next?! (how about chocolate corn ... )

Extremely flavorful (tastes like a cherry tomato, not chocolate), uniform, round, chocolate colored fruits in trusses of 8, measure 1" in diameter. Fruits hold stems very well, don't crack and can be picked several days before completely mature and allowed to ripen off the vine without sacrificing quality.  4' Pot.

    Price:
    $4.00

A charming violet for the rock garden or as a pathway edging in shady places. Forms a low tuft of purple-tinged leaves, with small mauve-purple violets in spring and fall. May continue blooming all summer in cool-summer regions. Appreciates a rich, moist soil. Also a nice choice also for tubs or mixed containers, especially with other purple-leaved plants such as Coral Bells. Self-seeds gently around the garden, but not in a weedy sort of way. Sometimes troubled by slugs.  Shade.  Zone 3-9. 4" pot

    Price:
    $5.00

The most darling viola in the universe!  A new and hard to find variety. It is an extremely floriferous violet with chocolate winged petals and a bronze face. Exposure Full Sun to Part Shade. Annual. Height: 6".  4" pot size.
